It took four years for him to follow up Elaenia, but Sam Shepherd’s second Floating Points LP was well worth the wait. A perfect blend of acoustic and synthesised aesthetics that creates a wondrously chaotic but satisfying record.

This feels like a warmer, more humane album than his debut – and it is definitely more in touch with the early, dancefloor-focused FloPo singles like “Vacuum Boogie” and “King Bromeliad“. “Anasickmodular” bubbles along like the viscous liquid on the album art and lead single “LesAlpx” is a certified pumper.
There are clear similarities with Plastic People stablemates Kieran Hebden (Four Tet) & Dan Snaith (Caribou/Daphni)’s output, but there are also forays into neo-classical with the funereal march of “Requiem for CS70 and Strings” which channels Max Richter and Nils Frahm.
A stunning record that is both beautiful and groovy – Floating Points at his inimitable best.
